The first vessel passed through the Panama Canal

August 15, 1914

The intention to build a navigable canal existed among medieval Spanish colonizers.
Panama Canal

The intention to build a navigable canal on the Panama Isthmus, which connects the Northern and Southern subcontinents of the American continent, also existed among medieval Spanish colonizers-conquistadors.

However, the practical implementation of such a project became possible only at the level of engineering thought and technology of the turn of the 19-20th centuries. The initiative of construction belonged to the French joint-stock company, headed by the famous builder of the Suez Canal Ferdinand Lesseps. Lush dramatized ceremony of laying the Panama Canal at the mouth of the Rio Grande River was held on January 1, 1880.

However, project mistakes, constantly hindering construction work, coupled with the crackling and false advertising and numerous financial abuses, brought enormous losses to shareholders and provoked a grand international scandal. The construction was suspended. Loud lawsuits began. And the word "Panama" has become synonymous with a large-scale financial scam.

At the end of 1898, the French government proposed to US President William McKinley to redeem the right to lay the Panama Canal for $ 40 million. The American company resumed construction work and successfully brought them to completion.

The total length of the Panama Canal was 81.6 km.
The minimum height above sea level is 83 m.
The minimum width on the bottom is 150 m.
The depth of the sluices is 12.5 m.
Time of passage of vessels through the channel is 7-8 hours.
The capacity is 36 vessels per day.

August 15, 1914, shipping from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific through the Isthmus of Panama was opened - the first vessel passed through the canal, it became the ship "Cristobal".

But the official opening was only June 12, 1920, after which the channel actually went into operation.
