The term Cosplay, is thought, to have been coined by a Japanese journalist Takahashi in 1984 after visiting the Fiction World Science 1984 Worldcon convention in Los Angeles.
The main attribute of cosplay is a costume, personifying the character's image. As a rule, the costume is made by cosplayer independently from improvised or materials specialized in props, however, there are also purchased costumes.

In the case of weapons imitation, many festivals have strict rules on prohibiting the use of combat, traumatic, airsoft and any real weapons in cosplay.
The image chosen for cosplay can be taken from any source or coined by the author of cosplay as an original idea or as a synthesis of various famous characters and styles.
Over time, pop culture changed, and with it, the main trends that influenced cosplay changed. If in the 1970s – 1980s comics were the main engines of cosplay, in the 1980s – 1990s movies were added to them. In the 2000s, as the graphics capabilities of personal computers and video game consoles increased, cosplayers began to actively draw ideas from video games.
