The treasure does not have to be hidden in a chest or buried deep underground. Expensive finds can be found in the most unexpected places - in a trash can, just on the road, or even in the freezer. Five such cases from the recent past.

Gold in the carriage

In October 2019, in Switzerland, a bag with three kilograms of gold was found in the carriage of the St. Gallen-Lucerne train. 

Its cost is $ 191 000. 

At first, the authorities tried to find the owner of the treasure on their own, but then turned to the media for help. The ingots will wait for their owner for five years. If he does not appear, the gold will go to the state treasury.

Meteorite on the farm

American David Mazurek has been propping up the barn doors with a 10-kilogram meteorite for more than 30 years.

"Alien from space" fell to Earth in the 1930s and went to David from the former owners of the farm.

In 2018, a man suspected that this was not an ordinary piece of iron, and turned to a local university. They confirmed that it was a meteorite. It was the sixth largest found in Michigan. In July 2019, Mazurek sold it to the University of Michigan Planetarium for $ 75,000.

A million on the road

Emily and David Schanz from Caroilan County, Virginia, USA, in May 2020, found bags of money on the road after accidentally hitting them with a car.

At first, they thought it was garbage forgotten by someone, and wanted to throw the bags into a landfill. But at the last moment they noticed plastic bags with money in them.

The couple handed over their find to the police. It turned out that the collectors had lost $ 1 million.

Crowns in the trash can

On July 31, 2018, the crowns of King Charles IX and his wife, Queen Christina, as well as the orb (symbol of power) of the monarch were stolen from the Cathedral in Strangnes (Sweden).

The stolen regalia were accidentally found in February last year in a garbage can on the outskirts of Stockholm. Traces of DNA found on the crown confirmed the suspect's guilt in theft.

Freezer treasure

In 2019, a cache of jewelry was found in the house of a deceased resident of Wiltshire (UK).

The grandchildren knew that their grandmother collected jewelry and asked the auctioneers to help with the search.

As a result, the treasure was found in the freezer, next to frozen steaks. 

Among those found: 

• a pendant with precious stones worth 30 thousand pounds sterling, 
• an Italian sapphire necklace of the 17th century, worth 15 thousand pounds,
• a Spanish multilayer gold necklace with rubies, diamonds and emeralds of the 16th century: 6 thousand pounds.
