It was invented by John Montague, the fourth Earl of Sandwich.

His main passion were the cards. In the 1750s, the Sandwich things became so bad that King George II decided to send him as ambassador to Madrid in order to save him from creditors.

Returning to London in 1762, Sir John rushed to the card table and sat behind him day and night. Without taking his eyes off the cards, Sandwich ordered to bring cold meat and bread, and then serve the meat in the "cover" of two slices of bread, to have a snack, without interrupting the game.
