On the night of January 7, 1610 Galileo Galilei sends his 32-times telescope to the sky. He saw there not only the lunar landscape, mountain ranges and peaks, but also discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter, now called "Galilean."

Thanks to his discovery, which he described in the work "The Star Herald," Galileo soon becomes the most famous scientist in Europe. The book had a sensational success, even the crowned people rushed to acquire a telescope. Galileo presented several telescopes to the Venetian Senate, who, as a token of gratitude, appointed him a lifelong professor with a salary of 1,000 florins.

The German astronomer Simon Marius (1573-1624) simultaneously and independently of Galileo discovered all four moons of Jupiter (1610), and gave them the names of  Io, Europe, Ganymede and Callisto.

History made that Galileo is considered the pioneer of satellites, behind which the names given by Marius were fixed.

Orthodox celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on the Julian calendar (the so-called old style) 14 days later than the Catholics who celebrate this holiday on the Gregorian calendar.

The true birth date of Christ is unknown. The Holy Scripture does not indicate the day or year when Christ was born. In later studies, it was discovered that Christ was born 5 or 6 years earlier.

The decision to celebrate the Nativity of Christ on December 25 was taken at the Ephesus Church Council in 431. Further, this holiday was introduced in Constantinople.
