The custom did not eating food until the first evening star, associated with the memory of the appearance of a star in the East, which heralded the birth of Christ, appeared in the sky.

Just before the beginning of the meal, they read a passage from the Gospel of St. Luke about the Nativity of Christ and a common family prayer.
