Russian chemist Sergey Lebedev was the first in the world to develop a method of producing synthetic rubber
In 1926, the Soviet government announced a competition for the best work on the synthesis of rubber and announced the first prize of one hundred thousand rubles. Under the terms of the competition, it was necessary to provide not only a description of the method of obtaining rubber, but also at least two kilograms of this product, as well as to develop a complete technology for its production in industrial conditions. It was also required that the raw material for the synthesis was cheap and affordable, and the cost of good quality rubber did not exceed the cost of natural.
Chemist Sergey Lebedev together with his students closed in the laboratory of the Military Medical Academy for work. Finally, on December 30, 1927, he managed to finish the experiment.
At first oil was chosen as the raw material for the production of synthetic rubber, but then it was replaced with alcohol. As a catalyst, Lebedev proposed metallic sodium.
On January 1, 1928, the jury of the competition received 2 kg of synthetic sodium-butadiene rubber obtained from ethyl alcohol, as well as a full set of technological documentation.
The competition conditions were so difficult to fulfill that none of the submitted samples fully met all the requirements. Nevertheless, Sergey Lebedev, the only one among the participants of the competition, received an award for his rubber and the method of its production.
During 1930, a pilot plant was built in Leningrad under the technology developed by Lebedev, and the production of synthetic rubber was launched.
In 1931, the scientist was awarded the Order of Lenin "for outstanding achievements in solving the problem of obtaining synthetic rubber."
