Surgeons transplanted the heart of a young baboon to the girl, known as Baby Fae. The girl, who was 14 days old, was born with a deadly disorder - left heart hyperplasia syndrome.
At Loma-Lind University Medical Center, mother of the girl allows to an American surgeon Dr. Leonard L. Bailey to perform an experimental heart transplant from a baboon to a person.
Baby Fae survived the operation and lived longer than any other recipient of the animal's heart. She lived only 20 days and died of a kidney infection, but it is still considered one of the biggest breakthroughs in medicine.
The surgery has been the subject of sharp ethical and legal discussions in the United States.
