Holidays

November 14

Day of the "medical" holidays: World Diabetes Day and International Speech Therapist Day.

World Diabetes Day

Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not work's correctly.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not work's correctly.

World Diabetes Day is set on the birthday of Frederick Banting, a Canadian physiologist who discovered the hormone insulin with Professor John MacLeod.

In January 1922, a young Canadian scientist Frederick Banting saved life for the first time in history by injecting insulin to 14-year-old boy who suffered from severe juvenile diabetes. Instead of obtaining a patent for insulin and subsequently becoming fabulously rich, Banting transfers all rights to the University of Toronto. Subsequently, the right to produce insulin was transferred to the Canadian Medical Research Council, and at the end of 1922 a new drug appeared on the drug market.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The overall result of uncontrolled diabetes is hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels), which over time leads to serious damage to many body systems, especially nerves and blood vessels.

On December 20, 2006, the United Nations adopted a Resolution on diabetes mellitus, in which the rapid increase in the incidence of diabetes was declared an extraordinary threat to the entire world community. Since 2007, World Diabetes Day is celebrated under the auspices of the UN. The purpose of the Day is to educate the public about the causes, symptoms, complications and treatment of this disease.

International Day of Speech Therapist

On November 14, the world celebrates the International Day of Speech Therapist, a professional holiday for representatives of one of the most important social professions.

The profession of speech therapist entered the top thirty most needed specialties in the world. It is a mistake to believe that a speech therapist is working to correct only the incorrect pronunciation of sounds. Sound correction is just the top of the iceberg. Speech therapist works with all speech disorders: general speech underdevelopment; its absence, disorders of voice, tempo and timbre of speech, speech disorders due to pathology of the central nervous system.

These specialists work in schools, polyclinics, open their own offices, but they are united by one common feature - all speech therapists, without exception, are eager to help their patients. After all, be that as it may, their work is akin to the work of physiotherapists - by correcting it, they return the child the luxury of human communication, give him the opportunity to actively live in society, successfully study in school and develop normally into adulthood.

Day of Geographical Information Systems

Annually on Wednesday of the third week of November to celebrate the Day of Geographical Information Systems, or GIS Day.

The date was initiated by a number of large American companies and organizations (National Geographic Society, USGS, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, ESRI).

GIS is a system designed to collect, store, analyze and graphically visualize spatial data and related information about objects represented in GIS objects. This is the official definition. But in the narrow sense, GIS is a software product that allows users to edit, analyze and search for objects on digital maps, as well as receive additional information about them - the building height, address, number of residents or companies located in it.

GIS data is used in cartography, geology, meteorology, land management, ecology, municipal government, transport, economics, defense, and many other areas.

In Folks Calendar

Cosmo and Damiana played the last wedding - forging the happiness of the young. By the way, the saints were venerated at the same time as guardians of the family hearth and as patrons of all artisans and handicrafts, mainly blacksmithing and female handicrafts. From this day, women sat down to spin wool, after which they could knit winter clothes from her or stumble warm fabrics.

In addition, it is believed that Cosmo and Damiana - are a chicken gods.
On this day chicken was on every table.

Also this was a girl's holiday. The bride girl arranged a feast for all her relatives and acquaintances on this day, and became, as it were, the hostess of the house. Chicken noodles were usually served as an honorable dish.

It was also a youth holiday. The girls gathered together in a free hut, laid the table (porridge was considered an obligatory dish) and invited single guys. The gatherings often continued until dawn, and after the young people, having dealt with refreshments, they went to steal the neighbors chickens.

Another ritual is associated with poultry. On this day, rich people sent chickens as a gift to poor relatives.

Peasant women brought birds as gifts to boyars, and those in return presented them ribbons. It was customary to hold such “petition chickens” in honor - to feed them with oats, barley and never to kill. And the eggs that they carried were considered curative.
