The first cash register was patented
Vintage cash registers - things of extraordinary beauty, just works of art. With all their appearance, they inspired respect for money. Unfortunately, now these devices are only in antique shops. Cash registers were made of copper, used mahogany, nickel, silver and even gold.
Sellers, not always, could accurately determine their own income. Often the information provided by employees in the daily ledgers was incomplete and unreliable. And the owner had no opportunity to catch his subordinates in bad faith. This gave tremendous opportunities for embezzlement to not honest personnel, especially with a large turnover.
The owner of a small cafe in the American city of Dayton, Ohio, James Ritty was in this situation. In the evenings, famous people of that time gathered in his ''Pony House'' bar. The future inventor's saloon has become a favorite spot for showman Buffalo Bill, boxer Jack Dempsey and bank robber John Dillinger. Located near the train station, the bar attracted many travelers daily, but it almost did not bring income. As it turned out, the reason for this was the petty theft of the bartenders, who could not resist the temptation to put their hands in the money box.
The solution came unexpectedly. Once Ritty went to rest in Europe, and, walking along the ship, wandered into the engine room, where he turned his attention to a device that automatically counted each turn of the motor shaft. A happy thought struck Ritty that a similar device could fix every purchase in a bar or cafe.
Returning home, Ritty and his brother designed a simple cash register, patented on November 4, 1879.
In the first model, each trade operation was recorded on the disk. Later, a special indicator appeared that allowed both the cashier and the buyer to see the purchase price. Now, after the indicator showed the amount that the seller had to put in the cash drawer, the temptation to conceal anything became much less. Ritti also came up with a device for fixing every money transaction on a paper roll. Now the owner could check the amount of cash on hand with the amount indicated on the roll, and find out exactly how many purchases were made per day.
The cafe began to bring a good income, not only because of the "honesty" of the bartenders, but also because of the presence of an unusual apparatus that gathered crowds of onlookers. Subsequently, the invention of Ritti was named the ''Incorruptible Ritti Cashier''.
