International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists
The day was established by the UN in 2013 in order to draw the world's attention to the alarming situation that limits the ability of journalists to perform their work and undermines society’s right to receive accurate information.
The date for the establishment of the Day was chosen in memory of two French journalists who, on the instructions of the editorial board, covered the course of the armed conflict in Mali, Ghislain Dupont and Claude Verlon. They were abducted and killed by militants on November 2, 2013.
This crime caused a public outcry, and as a result, the UN adopted a document condemning violence against members of the press and obstructing the performance of their duties. Indeed, according to international humanitarian law, media workers working in areas of armed conflict should be protected and respected by representatives of all warring parties.
