In 1959, he was part of the "first seven" - the first Americans who were preparing to fly into space.
John Glenn was the understudy of Alan Shepard, who on 5 May 1961 carried out a suborbital space flight, and Virgil Grissom, who also conducted a suborbital space flight on 21 July 1961.
John Glenn is the first American astronaut (and the third person in the world after the Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and German Titov), who made an orbital space flight. February 20, 1962 Glenn on the “Mercury-Atlas-6” three times circled the globe. The flight duration was 4 hours 55 minutes. After a successful splashdown, John Glenn became the national hero of the United States (he was awarded the NASA Medal for Distinguished Service).
The second flight, along with six more astronauts, John Glenn made as a payload specialist on the Discovery spacecraft (STS-95) from October 29 to November 7, 1998. Discovery flight lasted 213 hours and 44 minutes.
John Glenn's mission was to test the effects of microgravity on the body of older people. Thus, he became the oldest person in space at the moment.
