History of February 29

birthday, date, history, holidays,

In 46 BC, the Roman emperor Julius Caesar, wanting to correct the inaccuracy of the ancient chronology, ordered to specify the duration of the calendar year.

Astronomers found out: the year lasts 365 days and 6 hours. These 6 hours are usually not taken into account, therefore, a residue of a quarter of a day is obtained annually. Over time, this would lead to a significant deviation! To avoid this, scientist Sozigen proposed to consider every first three years simple, lasting for 365 days, and adding in February every fourth year the accumulated difference of one day: then February will have 29 days and a year 366 days. And to call such a year a “leap year”.

This chronology has spread among all the peoples that were part of the Roman Empire, and received the name of the Julian system.

February 29 is celebrated by the Catholic Church as a St. Oswald's Day, in which, according to Old English law, any woman could demand from a man that he become her husband and a man, under pain of a large fine, had no right to refuse her.

Cassian Day

In the Orthodox calendar, this last winter day is dedicated to the memory of St. John Cassian the Roman.

Going out of the hut before lunch was considered to be a bad omen this day - Cassian’s eye was bad, and the saint himself was known as a vindictive man.

In folks, they simply call him Cassian, adding nicknames that are offensive, but by no means senseless: stingy, cool, vindictive, envious, self-interested, unmerciful, ill-wisher. Noting with bitterness and fear: Cassian will take a look at something - it will wither, the brute will die, and the person will dry.”

Keeping away from sin, the cautious villagers tried not to start any work on this February day and not to leave the house.

They say that Cassian is angry at the whole world that he is rarely honored, noting only once every four years Cassian's name day, and even with caution, considering this day to be the most terrible of the year.

“Cassian, the envious, is angry at the peasants, that's why the breed is thin in a leap year.”

After all, Cassian, according to the old men, owned all the winds that he held on twenty chains, behind twenty iron doors, and being angry could pull them down to the ground, sending a heavy sea to people and cattle.

"It has been established since the Slavs to consider a leap year as dangerous and to attribute to it many unprecedented misfortunes. The 29th of February is a leap year ... there is the most disastrous day for all possible misfortunes. Then, as if, the cattle is falling, and the trees are drying up, and general diseases appear and family discord is turned up. "

In order to somehow appease the intractable saint, the most circumspect hosts remembered him on three Thursdays of the year, setting a candle and praying at the Cassians in the seventies, shrove and holy weeks. Without forgetting to “treat themselves with a drink and enjoy the song.” After all, in Russia from immemorial  times it was customary to drink and sing both in grief and in joy.
