Holidays

International π Day

March 14 in history (18 events): or π and Rivers Day
π ≈ 3.141 592 653 589 793 238 462 643 383 279 502 884 197 169 399 375

Today, on March 14, the world celebrates one of the most unusual holidays - International π Day.

For the first time, the Day was celebrated in 1988 in the popular science museum Exploratorium in  San Francisco, and this unofficial holiday came up the year before with the physicist from San Francisco, Larry Shaw, who noticed that in the American system of recording dates (month / number) day March 14 - 3/14 - coincides with the first digits of the number π = 3,14 ...

With this unusual number, we already encounter in the junior classes of the school, when we begin to study the circle. The number π is a mathematical constant expressing the ratio of the circumference length to the length of its diameter. In the digital expression, π begins as 3.141592 ... and has an infinite mathematical duration.

In everyday calculations we use a simplified number writing, leaving only two digits after the decimal point, 3.14.

Looking at this sign, it immediately becomes apparent why today is celebrated the Day of the π number.

According to experts, this number was discovered by Babylonian magicians.

It was used in the construction of the famous Tower of Babel. However, an insufficiently accurate calculation of the meaning of "π" led to the collapse of the entire project.

It is possible that this mathematical constant was the basis of the construction of the legendary Temple of King Solomon.

It is noteworthy that the International Day of the "π", accidentally or deliberately, coincides with the birthday of one of the most outstanding physicists of our time - the birthday of Albert Einstein (Albert Einstein).

Scientists and lovers of mathematics are very fond of this holiday, celebrating it with a variety of physics-mathematical and culinary (!) Activities. Cooking here is just right for you - usually large round cakes are baked, and the whole team sits around the "magic" circle (usually with the "π" drawn in the center), treating and discussing the relativity of this unusual number.

By the way, July 22 is also a similar holiday, because in the European tradition this date looks like 22/7, and the result of this fraction is approximately the number π.

International Day of the Rivers

March 14 in many countries celebrates the International Day of the Rivers, formerly known as the International Day against dams, for rivers, water and life. At the beginning of the anti-dam world movement, in 1998, more than 50 protests took place on this day in more than 20 countries of the world, including Brazil, India, Thailand, Australia, Russia, Japan, and the USA.

The initiative to hold the International Day against Dams belongs to an environmental organization International Network of Rivers from the USA. The Americans proposed to celebrate the Day of Action Against the Dams under the motto: “Behind the rivers - water and life!”.

The movement against dams have already achieved real results: two sixty-meter dams were dismantled in the USA, and a law that prohibits the construction of dams more than fifteen meters in heighten was passed in Sweden.
