SN 1987A is a supernova blazing on the outskirts of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy satellite of the Milky Way, about 168,000 light years from Earth.

The flash light reached the Earth on February 23, 1987. At the maximum reached in May 1987, she was visible to the naked eye. This is the closest supernova outburst observed since the invention of the telescope.

Supernova SN 1987A was discovered by Jan Shelton with the help of a 25 cm astrograph of the Las Campanas Observatory, and the first photo was taken by Mac Not on February 23 at 10:35.

The remainder of SN 1987A is under scrutiny. The peculiarity of the supernova is the two symmetrically located light rings, formed in the merger of two stars, discovered in 1994.

Astronomers predicted that as the gas cools down after the explosion, the atoms of oxygen, carbon and silicon in the cold central parts of the residue will bind, forming large amounts of molecules and dust. However, SN 1987A observations using infrared telescopes during the first 500 days after the explosion revealed only small amounts of hot dust. On January 6, 2014, a message appeared about the discovery in the ALMA project of much larger amounts of cold dust that shone brightly in the millimeter and sub-millimeter ranges. Astronomers estimated that at that time the supernova remnant contained the newly formed dust with a mass of a quarter of the mass of the Sun, and that almost all of the carbon released as a result of the explosion entered the dust composition; they also found significant amounts of carbon dioxide and silicon monoxide.

Neither the neutron star, nor the black hole, which, according to some models, should be in place of the outbreak, still did not found.

Holidays

Prokhor Vesnovoy

The peasants believed that this day began the turn for the spring.

Several sayings about the weather are connected with this day, for example, this: “Before Prokhor, the old woman groaned: ''oh, cold''. Prokhor da Vlas came: ''is there any spring for us? ”

Despite the fact that winters were still wary and asked February “not to frown in spring”, it was clear that it was not long to dominate the frost: even if it was cold on Prokhor, people believed that warming would soon come their rights: “Prokhor and the winter breathes, and February is raging, but he smells the spring.”
