The embryologist and geneticist from the Roslin Institute, Ian Wilmath, in the English edition of the journal Nature, dated February 27, 1997, published an article in which he told about a successful experiment on cloning lamb.
Thus, the successful cloning of a mammal was announced. Prior to Dolly's cloning, attempts have already been made to create full-fledged clones. Among them - sheep Megan and Morag, created by the same group of researchers from embryonic cells.
During the process of "creating" Dolly, inside 277 eggs the nucleus were transferred, taken from the udder of a six-year-old donor sheep. 29 embryos were formed of these, one of which, Dolly, survived. From this cell was created an individual, genetically identical to the mother. Sheep, born with the help of genetic engineering, was named Dolly. It became the first mammal to be grown by cloning.
And less than a year later, on January 12, 1998 in Paris, nineteen countries signed a protocol on the prohibition of human cloning. The Protocol is a complement to the European Convention on Human Rights.
Dolly died on February 14, 2003 from a progressing lung disease caused by a retrovirus. Between sheeps, almost constantly kept indoors, the risk of this disease increases dramatically, and Dolly for safety reasons practically did not lead to graze with other sheeps.
