Panda is one of the symbols of China
Until 1869, Europe was not aware of the existence of such an animal. On March 11, 1869, while traveling in China to the French naturalist and missionary Jean-Pierre Arman David, hunters from the Sichuan province presented as a gift a black and white hide of the beast, which they called bei-shuang - "white-chested bear".
David gave this Sichuan "miracle" to the Paris Museum of Natural History. Zoologists, invited to inspect the skins of an unknown beast, were amazed at the bizarre combination of fur colors. They subjected the skin to scrupulous research, initially deciding that they saw masterfully combined flaps of black and white fur, but without finding any traces of thread or glue, shave this suspicion and recognized the existence of an earlier unknown to Europeans animal, later called the great panda.
Since the second half of the 20th century, the panda has become something of a national emblem of China.
