Every year on January 26, the International Customs Day (International Customs Day) is celebrated worldwide, a professional holiday for all employees of the customs services of the planet.
In November 1952, the Convention on the Formation of the Customs Cooperation Council entered into force. On January 26, 1953, the first session of the Customs Cooperation Council was held in Brussels, in 1994 it received its current name - the World Customs Organization, WCO. 17 countries of Europe were represented at the meeting by the heads of their customs services. Thirty years later, in 1983, that day was chosen as the annual celebration of the International Day of the Customs Officer. The ideas of the customs community received a great response.
Quite quickly, from a modest organization that unites a limited number of European states, the Customs Cooperation Council has turned into an authoritative international organization. Currently, the World Customs Organization unites 182 member states that manage more than 98% of all international trade. Three quarters of them are developing countries.
International Customs Day is an occasion not only for the international solidarity of customs services around the world, summing up the work for the year and drawing up plans for the forthcoming one, but also for drawing public attention to the importance of the role of customs in the economic and social development of society.
Today more than 800 thousand people mark their professional holiday - this is the total number of customs officers all over the world.
