International Taxi Driver Day

March 22 in history (24 events)

March 22 taxi drivers around the world celebrate their professional holiday - International Day of a taxi driver.

It was on this day in 1907 that the first cars equipped with special meters appeared on the streets of London. London cab-men called the counter "taxi meter" - from the French "taxe" ("fee"), and the Greek "metrnon" ("measurement"). Since then, individual urban transport began to call a taxi, and cab drivers - taxi drivers.

The first London taxi cars were green and red.

The yellow color, which we consider traditional for these machines, came from the light hand of John Hertz, the founder of Hertz Corporation. Accepting old cars as payment for a new, enterprising American repainted used cars in yellow and used them as a taxi. Naturally, such bright cars were easily seen on the streets of the city, and later the practice of repainting a taxi in yellow took for the rule almost all such companies. And yellow will become the classic color of a taxi for the whole world.

Another recognizable symbol of a taxi was a pattern in the form of checkers. According to one version, the first checker pattern appeared in the 1920s on the machines of an American company that borrowed them from racing symbols. He had to attract the attention of customers and push them to the idea of speed of movement.
