AriesApril 9. Born on this day have an ingenious gift to translate the craziest ideas into actions, to turn fantasies into reality. They even manage to extract good dividends from this. Fortunately, the ideas of these people are always socially oriented, and therefore their implementation is for the benefit of others.

Those born on April 9 have a special and often funny style of thinking, but they cannot be called idle dreamers. Quite the opposite: they are not devoid of pragmatism and unmistakably guess the moment that is suitable for the implementation of the best ideas.

Not being overly sociable, they see their ideas as the main link between themselves, family, friends and colleagues.

We can say that the world in which they live is a closed space. Even if they have a desire to share their personal observations with the closest people, they do not always succeed.

Douglas Engelbart was awarded a prize for the creation of a computer mouse

Douglas Engelbart was awarded a prize for the creation of a computer mouse
Douglas Engelbart

The author of the idea and the developer of the concept of the familiar computer mouse was Douglas Engelbart. In 1963, Engelbart founded a research laboratory in which several computer projects were launched at once. The most notable of these were the NLS (oNLine System), a hypertext electronic database and a specially designed "mouse" device, which were not intended for general use until the mid-1980s.

NLS eventually acquired new opportunities.

It had the first graphical user interface in the history of computers based on pop-up windows (the author of the idea was Douglas), e-mailer, different options for printing text. In the program there were even built-in opportunities for holding teleconferences, which seemed to be something fantastic in the 1960s.

And when December 9, 1968 Douglas Engelbart presented the final version of his NLS at a major computer conference in San Francisco, it was like a thunder from the blue sky. Since then, this date is considered the birthday of a computer mouse.

In the 1970s, Douglas's laboratory participated in the ARPA project to create a computer network, and NLS was used to create the first online database. It was Stanford, in which Engelbart worked, became the second node of ARPANET.

In the 1980s, Douglas worked for a couple of corporations, but he was not allowed to conduct free research there. Work strictly on schedule and only on the products planned in advance - this life was not for him, and in 1986 Engelbart permanently left the corporate business, together with his daughter, having founded his own company Bootstrap Institute. There he could promote his thoughts, philosophy and ideas to the masses, or engage in research of interesting things.

... For the invention of the computer mouse on April 9, 1989 Engelbart received a prize of $10 000, and all the fees he made as a first contribution for a modest country house.

In 1997, Douglas Engelbart's contribution to the development of computer technology was rated higher: he was awarded the Lemelson Prize (500 000 dollars) for his outstanding contribution to computer technology, and a little later - the prestigious Turing Award.
