Scientists first isolated molecular oxygen
Joseph Priestley is one of the pioneers of molecular oxygen
The first information about oxygen became known in Europe from Chinese manuscripts of the 8th century. In the early 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci published data related to the chemistry of oxygen, not knowing yet that the oxygen-element.
Officially it is believed that oxygen was discovered by the English chemist Joseph Priestley on August 1, 1774, by decomposing the mercury oxide in a hermetically sealed vessel. Priestley directed the sun's rays to this compound with a powerful lens.
However, Priestley did not initially realize that he had discovered a new simple substance. He believed that he singled out one of the constituent parts of the air and called this gas "dephlogistic air."
In 1775 the scientist established that oxygen is an integral part of air, acids and is contained in many substances. About his discovery Priestley informed the outstanding French chemist Antoine Lavoisier.
A few years earlier in 1771, oxygen was given to the Swedish chemist Carl Scheele. He calcined nitrate with sulfuric acid and then decomposed the resulting nitric oxide. Calling this gas "fiery air", the scientist described his discovery in the book he published in 1777. Scheele also reported on his experience Lavoisier.
Using information Priestley and Scheele, Lavoisier was able finally to understand the nature of the gas. Thus, the pioneers of molecular oxygen can rightly be called all three scientists.
