In June 1675, the English King Charles II (1630-1685) ordered to begin construction in the eastern suburb of London, on the Greenwich Hill, an astronomical observatory.
In the seventeenth century, the main problem of naval navigation was the definition of longitude in the open seas. In principle, the longitude could be determined on the basis of observations of the position of the Moon, and Charles II in December 1674 founded the Royal Commission to consider this idea. The commission discussed the letter of astronomer John Flamsteed, who pointed out the practical difficulties in solving this problem.
Then the king instructed the solution of the problem to Flamsteed, appointing him the first Royal Astronomer. Under his leadership, tables were created for the movement of the Moon, a catalog of positions for about 3,000 brightest stars, and astro-metric observations were made.
A place for the new Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park was proposed by Christopher Wren. On August 10, 1675, the construction of the foundation of the Greenwich Observatory was begun.
Throughout the history of astronomy, the Greenwich Observatory played an important role.
The Washington Conference of 1884 adopted the meridian, passing through Greenwich, for the reference point of geographical longitude.
In the 20th century, the direction of the observatory's work changed: more attention was paid to astrophysics. Difficulties in observing the sky in brightly lit London led to the fact that in 1948 the observatory was transferred to Hearstmonso Castle in Sussex.
By the early 1970s, it became clear that there were no places in England where modern observations could be made, and it was decided to move all the observational work to La Palma in the Canary Islands.
In 1990, the observatory administration was moved to Cambridge.
