The ''Mir-1'' apparatus for the first time in history reached the bottom of the Arctic Ocean

On the deep-sea piloted apparatus '' Mir'', on August 2, 2007, for the first time in the history the bottom of the Arctic Ocean was reached at the North Pole. At the bottom of the ocean was placed the Russian flag and capsule with a message to future generations. In the history of the coldest ocean, several significant discoveries have been made.

For the first time in history, people reached the ocean bottom at the point of the geographical north pole, during the Russian scientific expedition to the North Pole in 2007, the "Arctic 2007".

The purpose of the expedition was quite material. The scientists wanted to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge is a continuation of the Siberian continental platform, which, in accordance with international maritime law, will allow Russia to include it in its continental shelf and obtain an exclusive right to develop mineral resources located on its territory. As a result, these proofs were obtained.

''Mir-1'' with a crew consisting of Anatoly Sagalevich, Arthur Chilingarov and Vladimir Gruzdev began to sink on August 2 at 9:28 Moscow time, and at 12:08 reached the ocean floor at a depth of 4,261 meters.

''Mir-2'' began diving at 9:47 and at 12:35 reached the bottom at a depth of 4,302 meters at a distance of 500 meters from the Mir-1.

At the bottom was set the flag of Russia, made of titanium alloy, and also left a capsule with a message to the descendants.

In Folks

Ilya day

In the folk, Ilya is a formidable holy, stern, punishing, but at the same time generous. He is great manager of the terrible forces of nature. In his submission rain, thunder, lightning.
Ilya is also called ''Thunder-bolt''. It is believed that thunder comes from knocking on the heavenly pavement of his chariot, in which he chases an evil spirit. And the lightning is an arrow, by them Ilya strikes evil power.

It was believed that in his power to send fertility to the Earth or even deprive people of the crop. On Ilyia day, all the evil spirits, fleeing the fiery arrows of the prophet, turn into different animals — it was the custom, to not allow dogs and cats go into the house, so as not to let a thunderstorm and lightning came into the house.

Usually there are “passerine nights” on Ilya - when deafening peals of thunder are heard throughout the whole night, lightning almost constantly flares up the whole sky, frightened birds rush about and flit all time. On such a night, cattle restless, and people suffers from insomnia because of fear.

After Ilya day was not supposed to swim in the river. Like, Ilya cooled the water. And the water no longer cares about those who against Ilya rules.
