Uniqueness of DNA is discovered - "genetic fingerprints"

September 10, 1984

Alec Jeffreys
Alec Jeffreys

On September 10, 1984, the British geneticist Alec Jeffreys discovered that each person's DNA is unique - how fingerprints are unique. As the inventor himself noted, it was like insight. He examined the X-ray images of DNA and suddenly saw that the strings of DNA are different. Jeffreys called them "genetic fingerprints."

This is how the "genetic dactyloscopy" originated. With the help of "genetic fingerprints" it is possible to establish kinship, to prove involvement in a crime or vice versa - to help people who are imprisoned due to a judicial error to be released into freedom - there are many such examples already.

The first area of practical application of this discovery was forensic science. To the traditional fingerprinting - the identification of a person by fingerprint - genetic dactyloscopy was added-identification of a person by hair, by saliva on a filter from a cigarette, or by a particle of skin, or by a droplet of blood. After all, in any human biomaterial, there is DNA. And as the scientist has established, it is unique for each of us. This was a new stage in the development of criminalistics.

Alec Jeffreys suggested introducing mandatory inclusion in the genetic database of all citizens of Britain. This would greatly help the police work. The database should store only the minimum information required to identify a person, and the samples themselves must be destroyed. According to Jeffreys, this is necessary to prevent forensic experts from extracting information about the nationality, color of hair and eyes from the genes. Thus, the police will first have to prove that the DNA found at the crime scene coincides with the record in the database, and only then get information about the person, and not use the geneticists' hints if they do not already have a suspect.

Successfully used the discovery of Jeffreys at the establishment of kinship. And this is not just the facts of establishing paternity. Thousands of other people tested the DNA test to prove, or, conversely, to refute kinship.

Today, DNA fingerprinting can be carried out anywhere, even in portable laboratories, and dozens of enterprises in the world produce equipment for genomic identification.

Interesting facts and stories

  • The sum of the length of human DNA molecules is one and a half thousand of the length from the Earth to the Sun.
  • Mankind uses only three percent of the opportunities provided to it by the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid.
  • The human body is able to treat itself, rejuvenate. The possibility of this lies in the genes.
  • The resource of deoxyribonucleic acid provides the biological existence of human beings up to a thousand years.
  • After the robbery in one of the jewelry salons, the police gave away the gloves that the robber had left at the scene of the crime. The police, after researching DNA from gloves and finding a suspect, could not file a charge against him. The fact that the suspect had a twin brother with identical genes, so who of them robbed the salon and how to determine the culprit - is unclear, no other evidence was found.
  • In the US state of Maryland, there was an amusing incident: when analyzing the DNA of a mother and her three children, the study showed that she was a non-native mother to her children. This raised a lot of noise, doubt and speculation. Since the woman carried the fourth child in the eighth month of pregnancy, after the birth, an analysis was conducted for the establishment of maternity. It turned out that her newborn baby is also not her! When the mother's data were examined, it was found that the egg of her mother was impregnated with spermatozoa of two different men, so the DNA sequence is not the same in different parts of her body.

Suicide Prevention Day

Every year on September 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) holds World Suicide Prevention Day.

Every year a millionth city disappears from the face of the planet. The population of this city does not die of old age, not of illness, not even of an accident - every year the population of a huge city voluntarily, of their choice, goes into oblivion.

These are the data of WHO on the number of deaths from suicide per year. The trends are such that by 2020 the number of suicides is likely to increase one and a half times.

According to statistics, the largest number of suicides takes place in the fall and winter, in the evening.

The prevalence of suicide cases leading in developed countries. The highest rate belongs to the countries of Eastern Europe. In Japan, about 30 thousand people commit suicide every year. The lowest indicators are in Latin America and Islamic countries. For Africa, statistics are virtually non-existent.

Therefore, the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with WHO, urges the public and authorities to hold events and actions on this day to strengthen the sense of responsibility for saving lives that may be lost as a result of suicide.
