VirgoSeptember 18. Born on this day are self-sufficient, serious and secretive.

Born 18 September are extremely solitary, even secretive people who, for one reason or another, often have a public career.

Their world is very personal, and it is not so easy to access it for outsiders.

They can be completely dependent on their partners, but at the same time, many of them are capable of decisively and unexpectedly breaking off friendship or love relationships if something does not suit them. Thus, it is dangerous to deal with them, unless their environment is ready for such a change.

September 18, 1698 in the Parisian Bastille from prison Piedmont was transferred to a mysterious prisoner - a man whose face was masked. This is only one of the few reliable facts of his life, which gave ground for numerous hypotheses of the real name and the origin of the prisoner. Legend, he also owes his nickname "Iron Mask".

The prisoner was taken to the Bastille in a dark pouch, and, according to the order, was imprisoned in one of the most deaf casemates in the Bastille, it was forbidden to talk to him. About the man in the iron mask, the prison authorities knew only that he had come from the island of Saint-Marguerite, and before that he had been kept in the fortress of Pinierol.

In silence he lived for long 5 years in his solitary cell and died in 1703. He was buried in the prison cemetery of St. Paul under the name of Marciali. The personal belongings of the deceased were burnt. In his cell they ransacked the walls and dismantled the floors, so that no inscriptions or immured notes remain. Then they forgot about him.

After 86 years, the Parisian people seized the Bastille. The Great French Revolution made it possible to unveil the archives of the terrible fortress-prison. Secular secrets were revealed, the fate of many victims of royal arbitrariness became clear.

But the mystery of the Iron Mask remained unsolved. All sheets of the prison book relating to this prisoner were destroyed.

Historians and writers have constructed various hypotheses about the personality of the mysterious silent.

  • Some saw him as Count Vermandois, son of Louis XIV and Lavalier;
  • Others believed that it was the quartermaster Fouquet;
  • called an other persons.
  • But especially stable were the versions that considered the "Iron Mask" as the half-brother of the "Sun King".
  • It was also assumed that the Bastille prisoner could have been the brother of Louis XIV, his twin, who was isolated for fear of civil strife in the country. This option, which seemed particularly romantic, was included in fiction.
The history of the "Iron Mask", which has been exciting for three centuries by the imagination of scientists, writers and filmmakers, began back in the eighties of the 17th century.

The first topic touched in 1732 by Voltaire in his "Century of Louis XIV."

A century later, Alexander Dumas-father addressed the riddle of the "Iron Mask".
