World Day of Elephants

On September 22, many countries celebrate one of the ecological holidays - World Day of Elephants, which was established on the initiative of environmental organizations, ecologists and caring people concerned about the decline in the number of these animals. Someone this fact can cause astonishment, but, alas, today a thick-skinned giants need protection.

Elephants - the largest of the land mammals on the planet, belong to the elephant family (Elephantidae), the Proboscidea. They are intelligent, possessing self-awareness and highly organized animals, the only survivors of the ancient group of proboscis, formerly inhabiting most of the land. Now in nature, elephants inhabit the tropical forests and savannas of Southeast Asia and Africa.

Since ancient times, elephants are revered by many peoples of the world, in many cultures they are a symbol of power and greatness of rulers, wisdom and tranquility, kindness and well-being. In any Buddhist country, elephants are revered as a symbol of longevity, prudence.

They played an important role in the real life of people. It is known that elephants in ancient times participated in military campaigns and battles, helped in the construction and transportation of goods, were irreplaceable helpers of the peasants. And even today the welfare of a number of countries, where tourism is one of the key branches of the economy, directly "depends" on elephants that attract tourists to the country. For example, in Thailand and India, elephants take part in all holidays, creating a unique color, playing polo, racing, drawing, entertaining tourists ...

However, people are the main enemy of the elephant. After all, the main reasons for the reduction in the number of these animals are people who hunting for tusks and meat, extermination because they damage to crops, deforestation - the natural habitat of elephants, and in general the deterioration of the environment.

Today, for example, African elephants are a step away from extinction. Despite the fact that in many countries of the world the killing of an elephant is punishable by death, and for their protection, conservation and nature protection zones have been created, but the problem still remains.

On Indian elephants, hunting for tusks, which are only in males, but also those very short, do not lead. But even here the situation is not easier. Since India is considered the most densely populated place in the world, elephants are simply driven out of their natural habitat, often doomed to die from lack of food and water.

And even zoos - this is not a solution to the problem. After all, they are far from everywhere comfortable, and not everywhere behind the elephants there is appropriate care and kind attitude. But, first of all, in captivity, elephants practically do not reproduce, and their life span decreases at times (the average life expectancy at will is 60-70 years).

Today, for example, African elephants are a step away from extinction.

At present, only two species are preserved: the Indian elephant, which reaches a height of 2.5 meters and weight of 3-5 tons, and a larger representative - an African elephant, with a weight of 5-7 tons, its height can reach up to 4 meters. Today in Africa there are about 500-600 thousand elephants, in Asia - about 30 thousand individuals, and these figures are constantly decreasing. Indian elephants are listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as "in dangerous condition", African - as "in a state close to threatened". In 1989, the UN decision completely banned the international trade of ivory (tusks), which is used for jewelry and handicrafts.

Therefore, the main purpose of the Day is to disseminate information on the need to protect and preserve a population of African and Indian (or Asian) elephants, and to draw the general public's attention to the problem of the illegal extermination of elephants and the inappropriate keeping of these animals in captivity.

And, despite the fact that the World elephant day does not yet have official status, a lot of environmental organizations have traditionally taken part in organizing events dedicated to this date in different countries of the world. On this day, educational events, flash mobs, exhibitions and conferences are held, people are told about elephants, about their life in nature and in captivity, about the problems of preserving these majestic animals.

It should also be noted that this is not the only date devoted to elephants. So, there are other holidays and international days directly related to these animals and celebrated by the decision of various initiative groups from different parts of the world. For example, June 20 marks the World Day for the protection of elephants in zoos, and March 13 - Elephant Day in Thailand. There is also the World Elephant Day (or "Slonowin"), which is celebrated annually on November 30.
