Today, June 20, animal advocates call attention to the problems of elephants - the most majestic animals of our time. For the first time, the International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos (IDAEZ) was celebrated in 2009, at the same time the movement's activists defined their main tasks, the main one of which is the release of all elephants from the world from captivity. Since then, this Day is celebrated annually.
Elephants, the largest land mammals, are created for open spaces. These highly developed animals are united in large families with close relationships, communicating with each other even from a distance. On the day they pass several kilometers, overcoming deserts, rivers, forests and savannahs.
In captivity, they are deprived of all this and, ultimately, live an inferior life - solely for people to have the pleasure of seeing the giants with their own eyes. In addition, elephants often suffer from cruel methods of training, which are still used in some regions. Among other things, steel hooks are used, for example, to force the animal to submit to man.
On Elephant Protection Day in zoos, animal advocates organize a variety of educational activities, telling people about elephants, their habitual way of life and how difficult it is for them to be captive.
In the United States of America, this action has been held for several years and managed to bring the first results. About 20 US zoos have closed or are about to close pavilions with elephants; 11 zoos moved 14 elephants to nature reserves, created specifically for these animals.
Day of protection of elephants in zoos is not included in the number of official. However, its initiators are going to struggle to ensure that the UN formally included it in the calendar of dates.
By the way, September 22 marks one more Day of protection of elephants. It is dedicated to all the elephants of the world, and not only to those contained in zoos.
