At the helm of power in the state of the Abbasids stood the 20-year-old Harun al-Rashid

Harun al-Rashid (766-809) - the fifth Baghdad caliph from the Abbasid dynasty. He became the ruler of the Abassid caliphate on September 14, 786, and ruled with the Vezirs of the Barmakid family, who represented the Iranian feudal aristocracy, and after their dismissal in 803 he began to rule alone. He died in 809 during a military campaign.

Harun turned Baghdad into the brilliant and intellectual capital of the East. He built a magnificent palace, founded a large university and library in Baghdad, built schools and hospitals, patronized science and the arts, encouraged music classes, attracted scientists, poets, doctors and musicians, even foreigners, to the court. He was fond of science and wrote poetry.

With him, the agriculture, crafts, trade and culture (mainly literature) have reached considerable development in the Caliphate. Harun established contacts with China and the Frankish state (even entered into correspondence with Charlemagne) and entered into the official paperwork a paper that only recently gained fame outside of China.

Although the reign of Harun al-Rashid fell on the time of the internal weakening of the Baghdad Caliphate, he sought to strengthen the unity of the state on the basis of official Islam, focusing on the clergy and the Sunni majority of the population. And against the opposition movements in Islam carried out repression and pursued a policy of limiting the rights of non-Muslim groups in the caliphate.

The figure of Harun al-Rashid was idealized in Arabic folklore. He became one of the heroes of the fairy tales "Thousand and One Nights", where he appears as a kind, wise and just ruler, protecting ordinary people from dishonest officials and judges. Dressing himself in a merchant's dress, he walks through the night streets of Baghdad to learn about the true state of affairs in the country and the needs of his subjects.

The rule of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid was marked by an economic and cultural flourishing and was preserved in the memory of Muslims as the "golden age" of the Baghdad caliphate.
