The Chernobyl nuclear power plant - the first-born of the nuclear power industry of Ukraine - has become a symbol of the biggest technogenic disaster in the history of mankind.

At the fourth power unit of the station, a powerful explosion occurred, equivalent to 500 Hiroshima bombs. This event radically changed the lives of millions of people.

As a result of the accident at the nuclear power plant, radioactive contamination occurred within a radius of 30 kilometers. 19 Russian regions were exposed to radiation pollution. This territory is almost 60 thousand square kilometers with a population of about three million people. As a result of the catastrophe, about 23% of Belarus and large areas of Europe were contaminated with radioactive cesium.

On December 17, 2003, the delegates of the 58th session of the UN General Assembly accepted a resolution on Chernobyl, emphasizing the long-term nature of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
