On this day of 1947 the Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl set off on a raft of Kon-Tiki. The purpose of his journey was to confirm his hypothesis about the possibility of the initial colonization of Polynesia from South America.

Many scientists of the time were sure that the ancestors of the natives who settled Polynesia sailed to the Pacific islands from Southeast Asia. But Heyerdahl believed that they sailed from America. And to prove this, the scientist decided to build a raft and exactly repeat the alleged path of the Inca leader Kon-Tiki. Famous Egyptologists, specialists in the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia argued with the Thor. They rejected the very possibility of long voyage on papyrus boats in the ocean.

Heyerdahl's journey went down in history as one of the most extraordinary travels of the last century. Swimming on a papyrus ship was seen by many as an adventure.

Heyerdahl sailed with a crew on a balsa raft of Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia. The raft left the Peruvian port of Callao on April 28, 1947.

Hundred and one day Thor Heyerdahl and his five brave companions fought with high waves, bad weather and hunger. They sailed about five thousand nautical miles (this is about eight thousand kilometers). And on August 7, 1947, travelers pestered the Polynesian atoll of Raroia. Thus, they proved that on balsa rafts such voyages could be made in ancient times.
