The first International Jazz Day was held in 2012. On the introduction of a new date in the calendar and the establishment of its celebration on April 30, the UNESCO General Conference announced in November 2011.

The goal of the holiday was to "increase the level of awareness of the international community about the pedagogical role of jazz as a force that promotes peace, unity, dialogue and increased contacts between people."

Currently, many public organizations, educational institutions and individuals, as well as public authorities, support the promotion of jazz. And the International Day of Jazz is one tool for this.

Jazz originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the United States as a synthesis of African and European cultures and to this day remains a unique form of musical art that unites races and nationalities and erase the boundaries between people and states.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the first Jazz Day, noted: "Jazz has always been a factor of positive changes throughout its history, it remains to this day. That's why UNESCO proclaimed the International Jazz Day. This music, in the origins of which lies slavery, has always passionately opposed all forms of oppression. She speaks the language of freedom, which is essential for all cultures. UNESCO is guided by the same goals in its efforts to build bridges of dialogue and mutual understanding among all cultures and societies. "

Therefore, celebrating the International Jazz Day, UNESCO pays tribute to the unique musical style, which is jazz; increases the awareness of the international community, stressing the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; strengthens international cooperation and ties in the jazz music.

The first day of jazz was marked by a festive program, which included live performances by musicians, master classes and roundtables with the participation of people who made a great contribution to the development of this art. In subsequent years, such events have become traditional.

By the way, for the first time the word "jazz" was mentioned in the press on April 2, 1912.

Folk Calendar

Walpurgis Night

On the night of April 30 to May 1, Walpurgis Night is celebrated - the most significant of the pagan holidays dedicated to fertility.

Having heard about Walpurgis Night, most people think of sabbaths, witches, naked dancing under the moon, feasts and maybe even saddles.

However, not all so simple. Walpurgis Night is the same as Beltey, or May Eve, and is celebrated on the night of April 30 to commemorate the burgeoning spring.

The name of Walpurgis Night is associated with the name of St. Walpurgi, the Wimburn nun, who came from England to Germany in 748 to found a monastery. She died on February 25, 777 in Heidenheim. She was extremely popular, and soon they began to venerate her as a saint. In the Roman list of saints, her day is May 1st.

In the Middle Ages there was a belief that Walpurgis Night is the night of the feast of witches in all of Germany and Scandinavia. The witches saddled their brooms and flew to the mountain peaks, where they spent time in wild feasts and dances. The boundaries between the worlds opened, so in the old days on the evening of April 30, fires burned everywhere in Europe. The predators, which could have ruined the flock (after all, the shepherd season began in May) and evil spirits were also scared.

Now, on the night of April 30 to May 1, Walpurgis Night is celebrated all over Central and Northern Europe - this is a celebration of the Spring Meeting, when huge bonfires are lit to ward off witches, flying together on this night.

The holiday program has not changed for more than 100 years: ancient games like burners, performances of student choirs and traditional bonfires on the eve of Walpurgis Night. This is how the canonized saint became the embodiment of darkness.

A few years ago, the enterprising German DJ Maximilian Lenz (DJ Westbam) invented the ''MayDay'' youth festival. Every year, from April 30 to May 1, young people from all over Germany come to the Westfallenhalle in Dortmund to meet the most progressive dance music.
