International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
The struggle to eradicate poverty is one of the main moral challenges of our time.
“The struggle to eradicate poverty - one of the main moral challenges of our time - cannot remain the goal of units; it should be the vocation of many. On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, I urge everyone to join this fight. Together we can make real and significant progress in eradicating poverty ”(excerpt from the message of the UN Secretary-General on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, October 17, 2006).
The history of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is inextricably linked with the date of October 17, 1987. On that day, more than a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadero Square in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948 to pay tribute to the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. The participants stated that poverty is a violation of human rights, and reaffirmed the need to work together to enforce these rights. Relevant statements are inscribed on the Memorial Stone, which was opened that day.
Since then, people of all different classes, beliefs and social backgrounds gather annually on October 17 to confirm their position and to show solidarity with the poor.
The same memorial stones were opened in many countries of the world, and they are a gathering place for the Day. One such stone is located in the garden of the United Nations Headquarters, and near it the solemn ceremony is held annually by the United Nations Secretariat in New York.
In 1992, the UN General Assembly declared October 17 the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and called on all states to dedicate this Day to conduct and promote, depending on the country's specifics, specific activities related to poverty eradication.
And the purpose of this Day is to raise awareness of the need to fight for the elimination of poverty and destitution in all countries.
October 17 is a day when the world can actively attract attention to the problems of people living in poverty, when they can publicly state their problems and admit that the poor have a major role in fighting poverty. From the very beginning of the Day celebration, its most important part was the participation of representatives of the poor strata of the population themselves. Day 17 October also demonstrates the desire of people living in poverty to use their experience and knowledge to help eradicate poverty.
Every year, the events held on the Day are devoted to a specific topic, among which in different years were:
“By common efforts we will end poverty”
“The human rights and dignity of people living in poverty”,
“Children and families oppose poverty”,
“From poverty to decent work: bridging the gap”,
“Leaving no one behind: thinking, deciding and acting together against extreme poverty,”
“Building a Sustainable Future: Together, Ending Poverty and Discrimination,” etc.
