October 19, or Streptomycin Day
Zodiac Sign Libra

____________________________________________________________________________
Libra, October 19. Born on this day - independent, strong-willed and fairly well-known personalities who enliven the world around them.
At the same time, they value themselves too highly and are too straightforward about life.
Since they have a competitive spirit, they not only like to participate in various competitions, but are also able to artificially create a conflict situation even where it was not required.
The constant theme of their lives is the incessant search for the truth, so they dislike ulterior motives, sophisticated emotional manipulation and silent punishment.
They have a tendency to explode in a fit of anger, but after the storm subsides, they do not harbor anger and are ready to reconcile. Perhaps the driving force behind their irritable nature is the desire, as mentioned above, to shed true light on things, or, more accurately, to shed light of truth on the object of their interest.

In 1941, the antibiotic actinomycin, formed by Streptomyces antibioticus, was isolated in the laboratory of the American scientist Selman Waksman (at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA).
And on October 19, 1943, Albert Schatz (1920–2005) and Selman Waksman (1888–1973) isolated streptothricin, formed by Sir. lavendulae.
However, these antibiotic substances did not attract the wide attention of practitioners, since they had strong toxic properties. The isolation and study of these antibiotics was the threshold for the discovery by Waksman and his collaborators in 1943 of the remarkable antibiotic drug streptomycin produced by the Sir culture. griseus.
The discovery of streptomycin and the determination of its valuable medicinal qualities served as a powerful impetus in the study of actinomycetes and the search among them for the producers of new antibiotic substances.
Extensive searches have been crowned with the discovery of such valuable antibiotics as chloromycetin (chloramphenicol), neomycin, chlorteret-racicline, tetracycline and many other remarkable biologically active compounds formed by actinomycetes.
The main value of the discovery of streptomycin was that it was the first drug that brought a positive effect in the treatment of tuberculosis.
In 1952, Waksman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine "for the discovery of streptomycin, the first antibiotic effective in the treatment of tuberculosis."
